Came here during Memorial Day weekend and it did not disappoint! My parents use to go to the other Brothers restaurant back in the day and was glad this location was still opened. We made reservation for lunch at 1pm for table of 6. We went with the 6 person tasting menu which consists of kalbi, bulgogi, spicy pork or chicken, japchae noodles, spicy squid or shrimp and spicy tofu soup for $221. It's definitely worth it as they give you so much food and the banchan's are unlimited! We ordered the spicy squid btw and it was delicious! (Not spicy at all) Just an FYI - this is not an AYCE restaurant. Our server was friendly and very attentive. The staff's changed our grills as needed and overall experience was great! Will be back again in the near future for some more yummy Korean bbq!
Before Korean food was a commodity in America Brothers Restaurant provided a glimpse of authentic Korean cuisine. I am not speaking only of their table grilled marinated meats, which by themself are a valid reason to drive toward downtown or our lovely beaches on the massive Geary Boulevard. Their spicy tofu and pork soup is amazing as are any of their delicious entrees and appetizers. Service is spartan mainly because they are always packed , but rarely have I had a need that was not met within minutes.
Heard so much about their charcoal kbbq and went to try it on a Saturday at around 7:30 pm. We were able to get a seat immediately for our table of 4 and it was pretty spacious inside. Everything came out at one time from our set menu and it really let us take our time enjoying the food. We tried the 4 Person Set Menu that had Spicy Pork, Kalbi, Bulgogi, Japchae and a Tofu Soup. They don't have too many meat options at this restaurant but the ones they do have are such great quality. All of it was seasoned well and kept a good soft texture inside while the charcoal added smokiness and a light charring on the outside. The Japchae was probably some of the best I've had. The noodles were perfectly chewy and had a good sweet and savory taste to it. The tofu soup was a little too spicy for me so I didn't have too much but everyone else enjoyed it. We also got some steamed eggs on the side but they were a bit flavorless. One thing we really liked was that the ventilation was really good so it wasn't as smoky and hot inside as charcoal kbbq usually is. The menu was the perfect size and it has become a new favorite kbbq spot for us in the city.
Been thinking of all those places that I enjoyed before Yelp was born. And for whatever reason, but not due to bad experiences, I never returned. This is one on the top of the list. I remember coming here with my family as my parents introduced me to Korean cuisine in the city when coming here. This was likely in the '80's and I'm pretty sure that I haven't been back since the late '90's. I asked a couple of friends whether they were interested in coming here for an early Monday dinner. I was extremely lucky as a number of parking spaces were available right in front of the restaurant. We arrived just before their 5 pm opening time. We walked in and our lady greeter who would also wait on us asked us to wait a short while as she organized to open. She asked our table to preference so we chose a table across from the cashier counter. As we studied and discussed the menu, we quickly agreed on the 4-person tasting menu, served with rice https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=6eVv-IUD6ectZpdByFDXZg&userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q() and banchan (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=jwdySCB61P3zWB5asNklsA&userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q) for $144; not wanting to have to cook, we asked them to cook our meats in the kitchen. This meal includes the following: Kalbi, tender BBQ short rib marinated in special house sauce (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=4ETY8i-2WKozdhC-sNpODw&userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q) - My favorite protein of the night, both texturally and flavor wise. Bulgogi, tender BBQ ribeye marinated in special house sauce (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=AbTRjnIJ3WZNTqw3v82hUQ&userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q) - This was also excellent though, not cooking it ourselves over the charcoal grill left it with no char. Chicken, BBQ grilled chicken marinated in special house sauce (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=h2dRK8Z9o9-nFqO_CYMFig&userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q) - Also tasty, pieces of boneless chicken pieces that were tender and not dry at all. Japchae noodles, lightly sauteed vermicelli noodles (made with sweet potato) with beef and vegetables (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=bsyMKYnXQI2TaU9_O8PL_g&userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q) - Stir fried with plenty of mushrooms (my fave), this went well with the other menu items. Spicy tofu soup, requested medium spicy, tofu soup in beef broth with beef and vegetables (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=EvmKrIp8CjcEZF5MUE2xjQ&userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q) - Coming in a stone pot, this was warning for the cooling Richmond evening. We each had two bowls with me finishing a final half bowl. This pairs well with the provided bowl of rice. Though there are no real instructions or logisticsvij eating K BBQ, we dove in by exercising our chopstick skills in rotating and eating the variety of food on the table. The only tip for the inexperienced is using the provided lettuce, gojuchang, and banchan in making a wrap, with bulgogi (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=5VFLaPHPD7DSltVzB2ER_Q&userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q), in my case. The banchan is AYCE so don't hesitate to ask for refills. About halfway through the meal, I noticed the dining room was full, save for two tables; and it still wasn't 6 pm yet. Our waitress, the gentleman at the counter, and a couple guys who helped clear our dishes and bowls besides bringing out the hot charcoal traps for grilling were both friendly and efficient in that family feel way. I really enjoyed our meal and experience as it dawned on me afterwards. The reason that our past trips weren't more numerous was there was often a standing line outside that usually discouraged more visits; there is a sign up sheet near the door if there is one. I understand that it is under "new" (relatively) ownership but they are certainly continuing the legacy well. Looking forward to coming again.
I visited Brothers last Saturday for lunch. This place was packed around 12 30 pm, I have been wanting to visit this restaurant since a long time and trust me It was worth the wait. Our party of 4 ordered the four person tasting menu. The Kalbi and Bulgogi honestly were out of this world, the flavour and the quality were top notch. Even the Japchae Noodles were really good, so unique and flavourful. I wasn't very impressed with the Chicken, but everything else was really good and on point. The service was a little slow and I don't blame them because the restaurant was packed. The whole experience was amazing but also quite pricey. I would come here again on a special occasion and would recommend this place for anyone seeking an amazing Korean Bbq experience.
I took my fencer boy to a lovely wood charcoal BBQ after session recently. He said it is best he had in a while. Any late teen raised in California would have an opinion on Korean BBQ. That is a fact. Post fencing tournaments meal for many of his Mteam events. So you have it. Best bbq in the city for young athletes. I tell him this was a popular spot back in my mid 20s. Before internet and online dating. You meet groups of well intentioned and educated young men through friends and then you go out to eat here as a group. Dubbed as Thursday Night Dinners. Girls dresses up. Men paid the bill. Hopefully through those lengthy self served BBQ sessions a lad or two catches your eye. It did happen for a few of us for a few months. Fickle minded young peeps. All we had left was the memory of good Korean cuts of beef. Gen Zers find this concept extremely appalling. You don't mix food with dating. Cooking beef and chicken requires undivided attention. Certainly not after you became sweaty and smoky. Not appealing locale for date nights. We loaded up on beef and chicken. Surprisingly large but controlled portions. I send pics of the meal to my BFF. He said he takes his kids there often when it had outdoor seating. Indoor smoke was a turn off . Verdict: food is good. Higher quality. Need to dress down. Or wash your hair and clothes right after. But worth the effort!
Was seated promptly for lunch on Sunday after Bay to Breakers. The lunch specials are reasonably priced, and the servers poured tea for us immediately after being seated. They asked if we would like more of the sides as we finished them. The service was more than attentive and we were very happy with this. They were also considerate that one of our party members was running late and came back to check in on us when they arrived. It was a good spot for socialising, not loud and maintained well.
Have been wanting to try charcoal grill, and this was a good first experience! We (party of 2) went early during Mother's Day, and although it was crowded, we were seated relatively quickly, the food came out fast, and the servers were attentive at changing the grill, clearing dishes, refilling waters etc. We ordered the spicy pork, kalbi short ribs, and soondubu / spicy tofu soup in medium. The meat was tender, marinated well, and tasted high-quality, which I expected given the prices. My favorite was the spicy tofu soup, it was the perfect level of spice and was a comforting dish on a cold day. It was also nice to sip on in between breaks from the meat. The hot tea was also delicious and refreshing. Not sure if this is because of the holiday, but they also gave us a complimentary japchae w/ beef that was really good! Overall, with the rice & banchan (which was tasty!), we left full and even brought a little home. I would have to try more charcoal grill BBQ places, but this was a solid dinner spot!
We heard good things about Brothers so we decided to check it out, and as we came with four people, we went with the four people tasting menu. The 4 person tasting menu had kalbi, bulgogi, your choice of spicy pork or chicken, japchae, and spicy tofu soup. It also came with rice and banchan, which had a pretty good variety. There's a few points that makes Brothers a solid KBBQ place. The quality of the meats was pretty high quality, but that is to be expected considering the tasting menu was ~$36 per person. The portions are also solid as we were all feeling full after. The service was also quite good as they refilled our banchan quite quickly. Overall, I would say that Brothers is a solid choice for KBBQ in the city and would be happy to come back here again
Quality/Quantity - We took advantage of the lunch special bento boxes. This includes a Mu Guk, radish soup. I am not a soup person, but this was good. BBQ BULGOGI (RIBEYE BEEF) - Generous portions. Good flavors, very onion forward but good thing I like onions. BBQ GRILLED CHICKEN - Two orders. We actually could have shared 2 entrees total. Again, generous portions with good flavors and even more onions. Too bad my guests do not like onions as much as I do. So I guess I am getting an onion salad for dinner tonight, lol. Amazingly good banchan and generous with unlimited refills! Known for locally sourced produce that they use to make their own banchan fresh daily. Their dwen-jang (Korean traditional soybean paste) is also made in-house with a process that can take up to 6 months. And this was really good, I "mopped" up all that delicious goodness. 100% mesquite wood charcoal grills, but we prefer them to cook for us. The only time we use the grill is for entertaining our guests and visitors. Atmosphere - All indoor seating now, I think they took down the "pandemic" outdoor seating...? Open 7 days a week from noon to 9pm. Service - 5 stars; the team did a great job checking up on us often. They continued to refill our banchan. Price - $60 + tip. Good value for Korean food! FYI - your website prices differ slightly from your in store menu prices. Owner Comment - Congrats on your success since 1987 and keeping it in the family, 3rd generation.
